Imaginarium make some of the most popular wooden train tables and this year they came out with their best yet with the Imaginarium City Central Train Table. It replaces last year’s Imaginarium Classic Train Table With Roundhouse, which is no longer available.

The new City Central Train Table comes with a brand new train set with new buildings and designs for your youngster (or you) to explore. The design of the table itself is nearly identical to that of Imaginarium’s Classic Train Table with the exception that the wood is now a much darker more modern looking finish. Your kids won’t care about this but it will make the train table look like a little higher class in your house next to the rest of your furniture.

With this years’ model Imaginarium didn’t spare any detail and came up with some really great new additions to the train table like a light up bridge and working magnetic crane. Even though they didn’t put the word “roundhouse” in the title this year, rest assured your little ones will still have a roundhouse to park their engines in at night.

Imaginarium continues to be the leader in quality wooden train tables and that trend is likely to be extended with the addition of the Imaginarium City Central Train Table. If you are in the market for a new train table for your child, this one should be a top consideration.

The problem is with the raised portions themselves, which of course is the main feature of this toy train set. They are very unsturdy and easy for little hands to knock down. Which may result in more frustration than fun. Probably not what you might want when your child starts playing with the Spiral Train Set on Christmas morning.

The Imaginarium Spiral Train Set also includes 3 train cars, signs, and trees. Which are all very standard accessories for toy wooden trains but this set also includes two automobiles which you don’t find in many other sets and usually have to purchase separately. So that is a nice inclusion.

Really though for the price that you pay for this train set, there isn’t much else nice to say. The un-sturdy nature of the raised track portions really does hurt the value of this wooden train set. You may want to consider buying the PlanToys Road and Rail Set – Adventure instead. It also features many raised track portions and can be a little unstable but not nearly as bad as the Imaginarium set. If you really want to get this one though, I recommend getting Suretrack when buying this train set. Do yourself a favor and just order it at the same time.

It’s strange to see a wooden train set from Imaginarium that doesn’t live up to the quality that we’ve become accustomed to from them based on sets like the Imaginarium Classic Train Table with Roundhouse. There are plenty of better wooden train sets available than the Imaginarium Spiral Train Set. I recommend looking at other options before committing to buy this one.

Speaking of raised areas of track, there can be a tendency for tracks to fall down. This issue is not as pronounced as with the  Imaginarium Spiral Train Set but it is something to bear in mind, especially if the child you are buying the PlanToys Road & Rail Play Set – Adventure for is on the younger side. Purchasing a pack of Suretrack might also be a good idea as that can eliminate most or all of the possible track collapses.

It’s hard to really recommend the PlanToys Road & Rail Play Set – Adventure as a first wooden train set for someone because it doesn’t really feature much in the way of traditional wooden train playing aspects.  It could however certainly make a fun and unique addition to an existing toy wooden train collection.

There’s something special about the PlanToys Road & Rail Play Set – City Transportation. Not only is does this toy wooden trian set contain lots of things for your little one to see and do but the manufacturer uses wood from rubber trees that no longer provide resources for latex. This is a winning situation for the environmentally conscious consumer. When a company is able to use a tree that would otherwise be left to slowly die as a result of the processes of other manufacturing companies, rather than use virgin trees, it’s a good thing. They also use processes which reduce the waste output of their manufacturing plant and save energy.

The PlanToys Road & Rail City Transportation set has both train tracks and road tracks, as the name would suggest. Many of the other sets that have been reviewed on this site don’t put as much focus on the road vehicles as this one does. So if you’d like your child to have more of a mixture of both then this could be a good choice for you.

There is plenty of tracks included both for trains and road vehicles. Children will enjoy being able to gas up their vehicles at the station and stop at various signs and lights. There is also a train station for passengers to board the commuter train. Also included are over-passes and railroad crossings which add to the fun and excitement of the PlanToys Road & Rail set.

Just like the Imaginarium Classic Train Table with Roundhouse set that I reviewed previously, this is a mid to large size toy wooden train set which offers hours of play to children without any additional purchases needed. However, as with nearly all wooden train toys, the compatibility of different brands means you can easily add on if you need to. If you want to give your child the closest experience to being able to play with all of his favorite trains on the Island of Sodor, then The Roundhouse Set is a good choice for you. All of the most popular engines are in this set, including Thomas the Tank Engine, Henry, Bertie, Duke, and Skarloey. Also include are Rusty and the Sodor Line Caboose.

There’s lots to do and see around the Island of Sodor with the Thomas Roundhouse Set. Included are a water tower, roundhouse, round about, two different bridges, and a train station. Additional character pieces include an Engineer and Sir Topham Hat. Plenty of signs and trees are also in this set.

Moving parts and activities available on this set are a grain loader and grain car, a movable crane, and a barrel loader.

When you think about a toy wooden train set with an included table, there’s one feature that can make it a good buy: Built in storage drawers to store the train set. If you’ve got the space for it and you want your child to have a set that is up off of the floor and can remain intact, then the Imaginarium Classic Train Table Wooden Train Set could be a good choice of wooden trains for your child.

Playing with wooden train toys on the floor however can create it’s own set of issues. First of all floors in most older homes are not precisely even and things like bridges and overpasses can fall down easily. Another issue is that the older us parents get, the harder it becomes to get down on the floor and play with our kids for extended periods of time.

All of this can be solved by building your own train table. For me, this can take the joy of playing with wooden train toys to a whole new level. Extreme custom layouts are still possible when you build the train table to meet your wooden track layout style.
