Maxim 40 Piece Figure Eight Set

The MAXIM Figure Eight Train Set is one of their lower end wooden train sets and is a nice introductory set for someone that may be new to wood train toys.

The track layout is a simple figure eight with a crossover piece in the middle. Included in the set is an engine and three freight cars, as well as several wood cutouts of trees and farm animals.

I don’t have very many positive thoughts about this particular wooden train set. I don’t know if all of Maxim’s track is this way but at least the track that is included with this lower end set is milled a little tight when fitted together with track from other manufacturers. Also the track pieces feel like they could have used some more sanding as they have sharper edges than Thomas tracks or Melissa and Doug track pieces.

The train engine and freight cars that are included with the MAXIM Figure Eight Train Set don’t seem to hold the track as well as trains that come with sets made by other manufacturers. Also the steam stack on the engine came unglued in less than a month. These toys aren’t recommended for children under three yerars of age anyway but bear in mind that you’ll want to keep some wood glue on hand in case you face a similar situation.

The scenery pieces aren’t very imaginative. My son made little forests out of the trees for the first couple days but quickly grew frustrated when they fell over frequently. The included wooden animal cutouts are simple but nice. My son didn’t pay them much attention though except for once when I saw him loading some animals into a flatbed freight car from another set.

For a better quality and similarly priced introductory wooden train set other than the MAXIM Figure Eight Train Set I would suggest considering the Melissa and Doug Figure Eight set instead of this one.
