Melissa & Doug Classic Wooden Figure Eight Train Set

The Melissa & Doug Classic Wooden Figure Eight Train Set was the first one our son was ever given and what started me on my love for wooden train sets. The set comes with a wooden engine a coal car and a caboose. The set makes a basic figure eight and has a nice little bridge that crosses over the center which is made of three solid wood pieces as opposed to elevated tracks on many other sets which rely on risers. This type of bridge has some pros and cons.

On the plus side your child won’t be able to knock the bridge over, which can happen pretty easily with some of the more basic risers used for elevated tracks. This also limits your track configuration as well though. If you’re like me you enjoy using multiple sets or just bulk track to create your own layouts, and unlike riser pieces used to create any desired length of elevated tracks, this type of bridge can only ever be the size that it is.

Also the bridge on the Melissa & Doug Classic Wooden Figure Eight Train Set ascends/descends at too sharp of an angle and the front wheels of the engine will actually come off the track as it goes over the crest. My son never really seemed to notice this or care because his handle always on the train at the time pulling it along the track. Also the bridge is too steep for most battery operated engines to climb on their own.

Those are really minor complaints however, the Melissa & Doug Classic Wooden Figure Eight Train Set is a really nice beginner set for your child and one that has been absorbed into the larger collection of tracks for custom layouts in my household.
